05 — About this tool

A product profit calculator does one job well: it tells you, before you spend a penny, whether an item is actually worth listing. It's easy to see a product selling for £20 and assume there's decent money in it — until platform fees, postage, and ad spend eat into that number more than expected. This tool works out your real profit margin after every one of those costs, whether you're sourcing for eBay, Amazon, a dropshipping store, or general reselling, so you're deciding based on the number that actually lands in your account, not the headline sale price.

It also generates quick search links to check whether a supplier already exists for a product you've spotted on Amazon or elsewhere — useful for dropshippers trying to confirm a product isn't Amazon-exclusive stock before committing to it.

What counts as a good profit margin for reselling or dropshipping?

Most experienced sellers aim for at least 30% margin after all fees and shipping, since anything much lower leaves little room to absorb returns, a slow month, or rising ad costs. Below 15% is generally considered too thin to build a sustainable business around.

Does this calculator include VAT?

No — this tool works out margin before VAT, since whether VAT applies depends on your registration status and turnover. If you're VAT-registered, factor that into your final pricing separately.

Can I use this for wholesale buying, not just dropshipping?

Yes — the calculation is the same regardless of how you source stock. Just enter your actual cost price per unit, whether that's a dropship supplier's price or a wholesale bulk rate.
